PAGE 20 I THE GREAT ALPINE ROAD VISITOR GUIDE 213 Great Alpine Road, Myrtleford VIC 3737 Ph: 5751 1990 MYRTLEFORD/GAPSTED/OVENS Award winning vineyards and wineries The valley climate of North East Victoria makes it perfect for winemaking. So why not stop by one of the local cellar doors to award-winning drops? EAGLERANGE ESTATE Eaglerange Estate Winery, located in the Happy Valley less than a 10-minute drive south east of Myrtleford, has been in the Ivone family for more than three generations. Frank Ivone’s father, Luigi, selected the property in the late 1950s, the first Cabernet Sauvignon vines lovingly planted by hand in the spring of 1995 by Frank and Tiziana (Tish) with the help of Luigi and their three daughters, Natasha, Ashlee and Cassandra. The Cabernet Sauvignon was followed by Merlot and over the years other varieties such as Riesling, white Frontignac and Saperavi have been added to the vineyard. “The Saperavi has had a surprising uptake,” Frank said. “It is becoming our iconic wine. Wine lovers like its strong colour and love its flavour. It has a beautiful nose, too. “And because it’s not that common people are really searching for it.” Eaglerange is a regular on many tour stops with visitors enjoying not only a wine tasting but also a cheese platter including home made Ivone salami, a perfect match for a stunning red. The family’s motto, Set a Stout Heart to a Steep Hill, is very much a part of their everyday lives. In essence, it means that when faced with adversity we must be strong of heart and will. The family believes that the future of Eaglerange Estate lies within the talents of the next generation.
