GREAT ALPINE ROAD VISITOR GUIDE | PAGE 23 BEECHWORTH Lake Sambell: an oasis in the hills The pet-friendly Lake Sambell Caravan Park is regarded as one of the best in the area, and provides easy access to Beechworth and surrounds. As you drive into this lovely lakeside caravan park, you will be impressed not only with the beauty of the location, but also the warm reception you'll receive from owners Roger and Sue Humphris. A bike-riding haven Mountain bikers and cyclists will be happy to learn that the caravan park is located just a stone's throw from the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail – 100 kilometres of sealed and off-road cycling trails that provide riders with a picturesque link between Beechworth and the popular tourist towns of Wangaratta, Rutherglen, Bright and Myrtleford. Perhaps even better news for mountain bikers is the recent opening of the new IndigoEPIC Trail, the start of which is right behind the Lake Sambell Caravan Park. Linking the townships of Beechworth and Yackandandah, IndigoEPIC – which opened in March 2023 – comprises 56 kilometres of world-class, single track. The first year-round EPIC grade trail in Australia, the IndigoEPIC Trail has been designed to provide mountain bikers with a 'technically and physically challenging' off-road forest bike track. And if you don't have your own mountain bike with you, don't worry – you can hire mountain bikes from the caravan park's reception desk, where you can also hire out canoes and kayaks for paddling on the park's very own lake. Feature packed All sized campervans, pop-up vans and caravans are catered for at Lake Sambell Caravan Park, as well as family-sized tents and awnings. Large grassed spaces feature throughout the park, which also includes playgrounds, mini golf, and a number of excellent walking tracks. The park also offers a variety of well-equipped cabins and villas that can accommodate from two to six guests in one- or two- bedroom cabins, some of which are pet-friendly. For caravaners and campers, there are more than 50 powered and 70 unpowered sites set among shady trees and along the banks of Spring Creek. Lake Sambell Caravan Park also offers LPG gas refills, free Wi-Fi, three on-site vans, van storage, a guest laundry and dump point. For group events, the camp kitchen seats up to 30 people. All of these features make Lake Sambell Caravan Park an ideal base for exploring the Beechworth township and region.
