PAGE 30 | GREAT ALPINE ROAD VISITOR GUIDE MILAWA/OXELY The ideal time for a gourmet picnic Fourth-generation winemaker John Gehrig started his own brand, John Gehrig Wines, in the King Valley in 1976, optimising the cooler region for premium Riesling and Chenin Blanc, and lighter reds like Gamay and Pinot Noir. Ross Gehrig, John’s son, continues the family legacy by producing the styles and wines his father once did. Obsessed Ross is obsessed with using only the best grapes, and has created his own range of high-end, flavourful wines under the ‘RG’ label, which are only produced when the fruit is perfect and the time is right. Future The future looks bright for the Gehrig winemaking family, with sixth generation Grace Gehrig developing a keen passion for the industry. At just 13 years of age, Grace has demonstrated her natural talent by creating Grace’s Gamay, a light aromatic red she concocted (with some parental advice) at the tender age of eight. Sold under the John Gehrig Wines label, Gamay – a light aromatic red – is an ideal wine for summer and autumn. The region of Milawa/Oxley is the perfect place to enjoy a summer picnic, with John Gehrig wines, delicious, locally-crafted cheeses, and other gourmet delights. Photo: Visit Victoria according to mother Meghan, Grace’s tipple contains ‘’youthful enthusiasm’’ and wins the award for “precocious talent”!
