Great Alpine Road Visitor Guide

THE GREAT ALPINE ROAD VISITOR GUIDE I PAGE 41 OMEO Historic beauty First settled by pastoralists and then by goldminers, the township of Omeo is now regarded as the gateway to the Alps. Set high in the Great Dividing Range, it is one of Gippsland’s best keep secrets. The town originated as a settlement, springing up when a rich supply of alluvial gold was discovered in 1851. The region is steeped in history, with it once being one of the most lawless goldfield towns. Visitors can meander along the main street and follow the signs that provide an insight into the historic buildings and the history of the town. Take a step back in time and visit the Historical Park and Justice Precinct lovingly maintained by the historical society and something not to be missed. Visit Omeo’s Oriental Claims and venture to a time when the area was once home to one of the largest gold sluicing operations in the world. While the name suggests there were thousands of Chinese miners once scouring the land for gold, it actually refers to a 19th century European mining company with an unusual name, the Oriental Company. The warmer months see the scenery become something new to explore with wild flowers and other Alpine treasures hidden over the winter months by snow.
