THE GREAT ALPINE ROAD VISITOR GUIDE I PAGE 59 LAKES ENTRANCE Take a stroll or ride through the bush along the Lakes Discovery Trail. Lakes Discovery Trail A wonderful way to see East Gippsland on foot or bicycle is the 100-kilometre East Gippsland Rail Trail, which follows the former railway line between Bairnsdale and Orbost. The rail trail has some great feeder tracks including the Lakes Discovery Trail that comes in from Lakes Entrance through the Colquhoun Forest. It follows the old tramline that was used to transport rocks from the Mississippi Creek quarry down to the lakes when the man-made entrance to the Gippsland Lakes was formed in the early 1900s. The trail offers spectacular forest and ocean views along with historical attractions such as remaining sections of tramline in the bush and blocks of granite scattered alongside the tram route. Shorter trails for walking or cycling start at the Log Crossing picnic area and also take in great views and interesting sites. Carnival king of summer fun Visit Lakes Entrance during summer and you’re in for a real treat with fun for the whole family lining the town’s foreshore. Summer is when Chants Carnival comes to town from mid-December and throughout the summer school holidays bringing amusements and rides to the foreshore to entertain the whole family. Summer 2018-19 will be the carnival’s sixth season in the town. Rides like the Nitro Coaster, the only travelling roller coaster in Australia, are what bring people from far and wide to Lakes Entrance. Other rides and activities offer something for everyone, youngsters and grown-ups alike, including jumping castles, carousel, dodgem cars, Ferris wheel, Cha Cha, sideshows and a whole lot more. Chants Carnival not only supports Lakes Entrance in attracting visitors and keeping them here, it also injects funds into the community to further enhance its attractiveness to tourists. A full charity day at the carnival raises funds for the town’s annual New Year’s Eve fireworks, a major attraction in itself. It also supports the Australia Day woodchop on the foreshore. Be sure to enjoy a summer of carnival fun with Chants Amusements. Visit Lakes Entrance in summer to experience the rides and laughter along the foreshore with the annual foreshore carnival.
