Great Alpine Road Visitor Guide

GREAT ALPINE ROAD VISITOR GUIDE | PAGE 61 ENSAY Less than 20 kilometres south-east of Swifts Creek is the small township of Ensay. It is a peaceful little hideaway, perfect for a stop on your journey through a landscape of rivers and hills, where magnificent ancient eucalypts stand like sentinels along the roadside. The surrounding agricultural land is home to sheep and cattle, while local cockatoos soar en masse over the land and feast in the surrounding paddocks. An award-winning cellar door Positioned among these scenic hills is the renowned high country vineyard of the Ensay Winery. This estate is owned and operated by David and Jenny Coy, who opened their cellar door to the public in 1996. A true hidden gem, Ensay Winery was recognised by Gourmet Traveller magazine in Australia's prestigious Best Cellar Door Awards 2021. The six-acre vineyard produces some stunning examples of shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay and pinot noir. All wines are grown and made on site, from grapes handpicked by local pickers, and promptly processed on the property. Hot dry summers and warm autumn conditions punctuated by cool evening temperatures (due to the close proximity to the mountains) allow lengthy ripening periods, producing wines displaying unique cool-climate flavours that continue to develop and intensify. The winery and cellar door is a really special feature, built by winemaker David and his brother Peter using the age-old technique of rammed earth. Over the years, David and Jenny have established themselves as stylish hosts, offering exceptional dining experiences. With picnic tables positioned in select picturesque locations at the winery, you can also pack your own lunch and enjoy the stunning scenery over a glass of wine.
